I am rather terrible at finishing my spin books, but it’s fun to play along anyway. The details on The CC spin can be found here, but generally the idea is to select a list of 20 books on the classics club list that I have been meaning to read. Then next Sunday, October 20, the Classics Club website will post a number between 1 & 20, and that is the book that I will read.
I have a Classics Club “list” posted, but I decided to just make up a list of 20 books that I consider to be classics in some respect from my print TBR for this spin.
- His Excellency Eugene Rougon by Emil Zola
- Uncle Paul by Celia Fremlin
- Villette by Charlotte Bronte
- The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald
- The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James
- The Dud Avocado by Elaine Dundy
- Stoner by John Williams
- The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rugen by Elizabeth von Armin
- Someone at a Distance by Dorothy Whipple
- Inspector Imanishi Investigates by Seicho Matsumoto
- The Siege of Krishnapur by J.G. Farrell
- Good Behavior by Molly Keane
- The School for Love by Olivia Manning
Abigail by Magda SzaboNew Grub Street by George Gissing- A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
- The Vicar’s Daughter by E.H. Young
- Funeral in Berlin by Len Deighton
- Ordeal by Innocence by Agatha Christie
- The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene
- The Tortoise and the Hare by Elizabeth Jenkins
So, which one will it be?
Everything by Dorothy Whipple is wonderful. Stoner is also terrific.
I’ve read two of Dorothy Whipple’s books and loved both of them. Stoner was everywhere a few years ago, which is when I bought it, and it’s just been languishing on my shelves since!
There are some good books on your list. I hope you will get “Villette”, such a nice novel.

I will be reading Villette whether it comes up on the spin or not! I’m finishing up Charlotte Bronte this year, and I am currently in the middle of Shirley. So, putting it on my list was sort of cheating . . . haha.
I will check out your list!
You’re going to read it when it comes up, right? So no cheating involved. But I know what you mean. LOL
Thanks for visiting me, as well.
I will definitely read it if it comes up. And, also, if it doesn’t come up, haha!
Good idea. LOL
Good list. I just started on Farrell’s trilogy (review is up) so didn’t include the next book–too soon. I’ve read Villette by Charlotte Bronte
The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald (the movie is also good) and they were both worth it.
I read Troubles several months ago, so I also took a break before even contemplating picking up the second book!
The only book from your list I’ve read is The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene. I hope you get the Agatha Christie. It’s one I’m not familiar with.
I own a bunch of the Penguin Classics editions of Graham Greene’s books, but I have only read a couple of them. I agonized over which book to put on the list!
The Christie book will be a reread for me – I have a GR group where we are reading one Christie a month, and Ordeal by Innocence is the November book. However, I can tell you that it is a good mystery, especially for one of her later mysteries, which tend to be a bit weaker than the early/mid career mysteries.
Great list! I think I only read your #7, which I found actually quite boring, but that’s just me.

I read The Tortoise and The Hare for an earlier spin – it was a fascinating insight into an English marriage at that time.
Also read some great reviews for Abigail & J.G. Farrell thanks to the 1970 Club this week.
